Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic Surgery is a term used to describe techniques intended to enhance a person's appearance through surgical and medical procedures.
Also known as 'Plastic Surgery', these procedures are generally used to maintain a normal appearance, restore it, or enhance it toward some aesthetic ideal.

Reconstructive Surgical techniques were being carried out in India as far back as 2000BC, with the first major procedure of the Western World carried out in 1815 by British Surgeon - Joseph Constantine Carpue.

During World War I, an otolaryngologist from New Zealand, Harold Gillies, developed many new surgical techniques whilst caring for soldiers suffering from disfiguring facial injuries. His work was expanded upon during World War II by his cousin Archibald McIndoe, who pioneered new treatments for RAF aircrew suffering from burns. In 1946, Gillies carried out the first female-to-male sex reassignment surgery.

In more modern times, the 1960s and 70s can be regarded as the beginning of a new era for Cosmetic Surgeons and the past few decades have brought enormous advances in treatment and awareness among the general public.
